Moving Stories

As part of our community blog content at ON THE MOVE, we present our interview series, where we invite movers to bring their thoughts not only on the physical move but on the intensely personal experience of moving house. Here we explore the spirituality and psychology of Home and why where we live means so much to us. We want to hear your story, please share it with us.

Rika’s Story

From Holland to The Holy Land

With The Help of Benyamin at
ON THE MOVE Movers!

The Ashdod Port has a Visitor’s Conference Center with a theater. But we weren’t there on tour. We were newlyweds and we had to go to the port  to have my shipping container released from the authorities.

Even though I’m Israeli, I’m also Dutch. My father is a Sabre and my mother is from Holland. I had lived in Holland since I was a four year old child. I studied nursing there and then at the age of 27, I realized that I wanted Torah to be a real part of my life.

I left for Israel and entered the Mayanot Seminary, learning intensively. My Teshuvah process steered my future in a very beautiful direction and Baruch Hashem, now I’m married, building a family, in a Medical Ulpan and working at Terem here in Jerusalem.

Benyamin has moved us three times—we were neighbors In Nachlaot and my husband knows him from Shul.

But anyway getting back to the port—we had just gotten married and anyone who knows the whirlwind of an international wedding knows that even as a tourist, you wouldn’t think to go on a day trip to the Ashdod Port!

It could have become a real nightmare but Benyamin stayed with us and went with us from office to office, department to department dealing with the red tape and staying calm, level headed and reassuring.

Finally we got the containers released and headed back up to Jerusalem.
We unloaded the stuff into our little apartment. It was late at night.

Benyamin had re-arranged his schedule and had been with us the whole day.

He was more like a brother than a mover!
