The Natural Arrival of Gratitude
The storm last night tore through my roofing in a couple of places, and I awoke to wet plaster stripes down my kitchen wall and a puddle creeping dangerously toward an un-fired sculpture of a woman in prayer.
My initial reaction was accompanied by a heavy sigh: fix first and ask questions later. To accomplish this I put on a one-hour-and-twenty-minute video of Glen Gould playing Bach and got to furious work. by Sherrill Layton, Managing Editor at OTM  I wanted to call him "Judge," but he told me that Justin or "Stompie," Afrikaans for short and tough, would be just fine. In truth, this ex-magistrate lives up to his nickname, standing 5'6" and having served as the director for the first London drug court ever created.
Our conversation took many avenues, proving to be one of the most interesting professional conversations I've had—hecko, one of the most interesting, period. We covered Jerusalem's current fearful climate, health, and the joy of retirement. More than once I found myself in agreement with a wise man's words. Actor-humanitarian activist gives keynote address at ‘Israel and Haiti: Partners in Recovery and Development’ nearly six years after Haiti earthquake.On his first visit to Israel, American actor and humanitarian activist Sean Penn declared that the work of his nonprofit J/P Haitian Relief Organization has succeeded largely because of its cooperation with volunteers from IsraAID-The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid.
“The indirect impact of IsraAID is that everything that JP/HRO has accomplished would not have existed without the inspiration and support that they provided,” said Penn, the keynote speaker at IsraAID’s November 30 conference in Tel Aviv, “Can Haiti Grow? Haiti and Israel Partners in Recovery and Development.” Following the program, IsraAID introduced Penn to representatives of eight Israeli startups that offer technologies in agriculture, water and solar power to developing nations. The conference was geared to raising awareness about the current situation in Haiti nearly six years after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated the impoverished island country on Jan. 12, 2010. Israel was among the first countries to send humanitarian aid. The Foreign Ministry flew over 236 military, security, rescue and medical personnel that set up the first field hospital to treat victims. The delegation included a search-and-rescue and victim identification team from ZAKA; prosthetics maker Yehuda Pilosof from Rishon LeZion; and a 12-member medical team of IsraAID volunteers. |
